What was the main reason that there were more enslaved persons in the south than in the north during the 1700s?

D--While they all make a little bit of sense, slavery was outlawed in the North much later (1800s). No idea where the slaves could not tolerate the weather came from though? Many southerners used slaves to do work they did not want to have to do, but the main reason is the economy of the south depended on slave labor. The large plantations required many people to work them and paying people to work them would have been a loss of money to the owners. So rather than pay people to work the land, they enslaved people to do it.
