How do I tell my wife I want to get her pregnant?

My wife and I got married over a year ago and I think I am ready for a child. The problem is, I don't know if my wife is. We have always had the, "if it happens, it happens" mentality and left it at that. I have a very stable job and career path, and her work is weighted in the summer and early fall, so now would be a prime time to try (best time until next spring). We have talked in the past about if we were to have a kid, when the best time to do so would be. It is weird that the husband brings it up in conversation, which is why I am asking. But how should I bring it up? We are very open as far as communication is concerned, I just don't know how to start the conversation.
