My PS3 controller wont connect to PS3 without usb wire?

when i plug in my controller to my PS3 it flashes like a normal controller but then it assigns at random numbers the {1 2 3 4} like it could flash at 1 and 3. when i try to on my PS3 with it it wont on. The only way it could show life is threought the usb wire and that still wont make it work. even if i use the usb wire, the buttons wont work or anything. PLEEEEASSSE Help me...
